⚡ Quick answer

The Samco Battery SB-12-15DG is a 12V 15A SMPS battery charger — automatic, with Normal/Fast modes — priced at ₹4,206 including GST, with free delivery across Delhi NCR and all of India. Its six-step current knob, mode switch and live digital ammeter make it the right charger for 12V lead-acid batteries of 100Ah–180Ah — tubular inverter batteries, solar storage banks, tractor and DG-set batteries. Designed and manufactured in Delhi by Samco Battery, established 2000.

⚠️ Start low, and let the ammeter guide you. The knob has no amp markings — start near Minimum and step up towards Maximum while watching the ammeter, staying within the current your battery manufacturer specifies (roughly 10% of Ah capacity is the usual reference: about 15A for a 150Ah tubular bank, about 10A for a 100Ah battery). Use Normal mode for VRLA batteries and routine maintenance charging; flip to Fast only for weak, sulphated or deeply discharged batteries that refuse a normal charge, or to mix the electrolyte in flooded batteries. This model has no Float mode, so disconnect once the battery is charged. Check on the charger periodically while it is connected, and confirm charging voltages with Samco Battery if you are charging GEL.

02 Why SMPS

What is an SMPS battery charger — and why it suits inverter batteries

An SMPS battery charger is a switched-mode power supply charger: it regulates its charging output using high-frequency switching instead of a heavy 50 Hz iron-core transformer. That is why a 15A SMPS charger is light enough to carry between battery bays and mount on a shelf, while the automatic control keeps the charging current steady as the battery’s condition changes. Samco Battery has manufactured 12V SMPS battery chargers in Delhi since 2000 — this 15A model is built in the Gokhale Market workshop and sold direct, so the specification you read is the one that ships.

Weight

No iron-core transformer

High-frequency switching does the work a heavy transformer used to. The unit is lighter to carry between bays and easier to mount on a shelf or wall — the difference you notice on day one.

Control

Two modes, six steps

Flip Normal for VRLA batteries and routine maintenance, Fast for weak or sulphated batteries. The six-step knob scales the charge from Minimum to Maximum — the charger itself decides the amps from the battery’s condition.

Visibility

The ammeter shows the real draw

Live current in amps on a digital display, not an estimate. The reading tapers as the battery fills, which makes the end of a charge visible without a separate meter.

What this SMPS battery charger fits

  • 12V tubular, flat-plate, SMF and VRLA lead-acid batteries
  • Inverter and solar banks, 100Ah to 180Ah
  • Tractor and DG-set starter batteries
  • Mixed 12V batteries on a workshop bench, each at its own knob step
✕ Does not fit

What it is not for

  • Lithium-ion and LiFePO₄ batteries
  • 24V, 36V and 48V banks — this is a 12V charger only
  • Bike, scooter and CCTV batteries of 4Ah – 14Ah
  • Batteries so severely sulphated that even Fast mode will not take them — the regeneration desulfation charger is the tool for those
  • Car batteries as a first choice — the 6A model is the better match
How to read the two tiers — 100Ah to 180Ah is the recommended range for this charger. Anything from 35Ah to 99Ah is lower-capacity use and is only suitable with the knob at the lower steps, keeping the current within the figure the battery manufacturer specifies. A battery is not automatically suitable just because it falls inside the range: fifteen amps is a high charging current, so check the figure your battery maker states before connecting anything below 100Ah.

04 In use

How to charge a tubular inverter battery — 3 steps

1Read the battery first

Confirm it is 12V lead-acid — tubular, SMF or VRLA — and choose the mode: Normal for VRLA/SMF and routine charging, Fast for weak, sulphated or deeply discharged batteries — and for flooded batteries you want to stir.

2Connect, then set mode and knob

Red clamp to positive (+), black to negative (–) with the charger unplugged. Flip the switch left for Normal or right for Fast. Start the knob near Minimum and step towards Maximum for a stronger charge — low to start on a deeply discharged battery.

3Watch the ammeter taper

The reading falls as the battery fills. Switch off the mains first, then remove the clamps, and check the resting voltage before putting the battery back into service.

05 Applications

One 15A charger, six everyday uses across India

🏠 Inverter

Tubular inverter & home UPS batteries

The core job. 100Ah to 180Ah tubular batteries, charged at the current the battery maker specifies — start the knob low and step up while watching the ammeter. For a bank that stays wired between power cuts, the 12V 20A FCBC is the right tool.

☀️ Solar

12V solar battery charging

Off-grid banks topped up from mains after low-generation days, with the ammeter showing the taper as the bank fills.

🏪 Dealers

Battery & inverter dealers

Stock charging and pre-delivery top-up, where one knob and the Normal/Fast switch cover whatever comes onto the bench that hour.

🚜 Fleet

Truck, tractor & DG set batteries

Heavy 12V starter batteries. For 24V starter banks of two batteries in series, use the dual-voltage 12V/24V range.

🔻 Smaller

Batteries under 100Ah

Workable with the knob at the lower steps, though the 12V 10A variable charger at ₹3,234 covers 7Ah to 220Ah and reaches lower.

🔁 Recovery

Batteries that will not take a normal charge

Flip to Fast. Weak, sulphated and deeply discharged batteries that ignore Normal mode will often accept Fast — and in flooded batteries the stronger charge moves and mixes the electrolyte, so acid stops pooling at the bottom. For severe sulphation, the regeneration desulfation charger remains the heavier tool.

08 Questions

12V 15A SMPS charger — FAQs answered

What is an SMPS battery charger?

An SMPS (switched-mode power supply) battery charger regulates its output using high-frequency switching instead of a heavy iron-core transformer. That makes it lighter to carry and mount, while keeping the charging current steady. This Samco Battery model pairs SMPS regulation with automatic current control — the charger supplies what the battery’s condition calls for — and a live digital ammeter, so you can see the exact current the battery is drawing.

The knob has no amp markings — how do I set the current?

You don’t set amps; the charger does. It supplies what the battery’s condition calls for — more for a discharged battery, less as it fills — and the digital ammeter shows the draw live. The knob only sets how strong the charge may become: start near Minimum, step up towards Maximum, keeping the current within what your battery maker specifies (about 10% of Ah capacity is a common reference — roughly 15A for a 150Ah tubular battery).

What is the difference between Normal and Fast mode?

Normal mode is for VRLA batteries and routine maintenance charging. Fast mode is for weak, sulphated or deeply discharged batteries that will not accept a normal charge — and it is very useful for flooded batteries, because the stronger charge moves and mixes the electrolyte. Acid is heavy and settles at the bottom of the cell while water stays on top; Fast charging mixes them so there is no acid stratification. Flip the switch left for Normal, right for Fast.

Which batteries suit a 15 amp charger?

The primary recommended range is 100Ah to 180Ah: tubular and flat-plate inverter banks, solar storage and larger tractor batteries. Lower-capacity batteries from 35Ah to 99Ah — smaller tractor, DG-set and workshop batteries — are suitable only with the knob at the lower steps, keeping the current within the battery manufacturer’s specification. A smaller battery is not automatically suitable just because it falls inside the range.

Can I charge a 150Ah tubular inverter battery?

Yes. Any brand of 12V lead-acid tubular battery between 100Ah and 180Ah — including the batteries supplied with Luminous, Microtek and other home inverters. Turn the knob towards Maximum and watch the ammeter: per the common 10%-of-capacity guideline, the draw on a 150Ah battery will sit around 15A. The charger connects to the battery terminals, so the inverter brand does not matter.

Can I charge a car battery with it?

Technically yes, with the knob at its lowest steps, keeping within the current the battery maker specifies. But for a typical 35 to 100Ah car battery the Samco Battery 12V 6A charger is the closer match and the better buy. This 15 amp model earns its price on larger inverter, tubular and solar banks.

SMPS or transformer charger — which is better for a tubular battery?

For most homes and workshops, SMPS. A transformer (iron-core) charger is heavier and regulates current less tightly; an SMPS charger is lighter, holds the charging current more precisely and wastes less power as heat. Transformer units still suit rough site use where weight does not matter — Samco Battery builds both types in Delhi.

Does this charger have a Float or maintenance mode?

No. It charges automatically — the current tapers as the battery fills — but there is no Float stage, so disconnect it once the battery is charged rather than leaving it connected indefinitely. For a standby bank that stays wired between power cuts, use the 12V 20A FCBC inverter charger.

Does it work with GEL, AGM and sealed batteries?

Tubular, flat plate, SMF, VRLA and AGM types are supported — use Normal mode for VRLA and sealed batteries. GEL specifies lower charging voltages than flooded cells, so confirm the figures with Samco Battery before charging one. It is not intended for lithium-ion or LiFePO₄ packs.

How long does a charge take?

Divide the amp-hours you need to replace by the charging current shown on the ammeter, then add roughly a fifth for the final stage, where the current tapers as the battery fills. A 150Ah bank that is half discharged needs about 75Ah, so around six hours at 15A in practice. Actual time varies with depth of discharge, battery age, condition and temperature.
